about us
We are engineers, artists, and humanists who have grown weary of the ugly and harmful LED lighting that pervades our spaces. We set out in search of the best lightbulbs money could buy. After months of rigorous testing, we’ve found them.
why incandescent?
Humans are adapted to broad spectrum light stretching into the
infrared. The sun, campfires, candles, and other natural light sources all emit this type of
light.
There are numerous health benefits associated with infrared light.
While humble incandescent bulbs are perfect wideband replicas of the sun, LEDs emit only a
single or
a few narrow bands of light. None of this light is in the infrared, and most of it is in the
blue
band of the spectrum, causing numerous negative health effects and disrupting sleep.
Because LEDs run on DC power and our homes are wired for AC power, LEDs must be controlled via
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This causes the subtle flicker that affects circadian rhythm,
causes fatigue
and headaches, and is simply unpleasant.
Broad spectrum light is comfortable, healthy and much more beautiful than the narrow-band light
from LEDs. Even $6,000 cinema grade LEDs can't match the CRI (color rendering index) of our $2
bulbs.
Incandescent bulbs, because they produce light as blackbody emitters just like the sun, have a
perfect CRI of 100. Most LED bulbs have a CRI closer to 80, and even the very best can't get
past 95.
This is why many photographers and filmmakers hoarded incandescent bulbs during the dark times
of
the incandescent ban.
